Scoop off and flying
Two weeks into the high school football season and things already are getting interesting.
Some of the predictable things are happening: Knoch is dominating early, Seneca Valley is scoring tons of points and Grove City is bludgeoning opponents with an unrelenting running game.
And there are some things that may have caught some people by surprise: Butler snapped a 23-game losing streak in Week 1 against New Castle after falling behind 14-0 early, a young Mars team is off to a 2-0 start and Karns City’s two-headed quarterback rotation is working.
Also predictably, I am off to a good start with the exception of a few hiccups. I enter this week with a 19-4 overall record after a so-so 9-3 Week 2.
On to the picks:
•
Butler 22, Canon-McMillan 12 — Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.I won’t be fooled again by Butler. This has a Golden Tornado win written all over it and a 2-1 start for Butler.•
McDowell 30, Seneca Valley 28 — This should be one of the most entertaining games of the week. The Raiders can score — they’ve rolled up 89 points in the first two games, the most in the first two weeks in team history. But McDowell is just as dynamic on offense and the game is in Erie.•
Knoch 40, Valley 11 — And the Jugger-Knoch continues. Sorry, but Jugger-Knoch is just so darn catchy. And it applies. Is there anything the Knights can’t do on offense, defense or special teams? They are about as solid of a team as there is out there.•
Mars 19, Hampton 12 — It doesn’t matter who is in those cool blue and gold uniforms, it seems. Strap on a helmet with an M on the side and wins just come.•
DuBois 35, Slippery Rock 19 — Kudos to the Rockets and coach Brendan Hathaway for a big win last week.•
Shady Side Academy 22, Freeport 14 — The Yellowjackets are in for a battle in this one.•
Wilmington 30, Karns City 12 — These aren’t the Greyhounds who have dominated District 10 for the better part of a decade. They are still pretty darn good.•
Brookville 22, Moniteau 15 — As I write this, the status of Warriors’ QB Kyle Armagost is unknown, but the senior suffered what looked to be a pretty serious knee injury late last week in a win against Clarion.Moniteau, though, has a lot of talent other than Armagost. Brookville has tons of talent, too.•
Clarion 27, Union 17 — Taylor Smith is a beast for Union. But the Bobcats are smarting, coming off a loss to Moniteau and may get starting QB Brandon Heeter back.•
Redbank Valley 29, A-C Valley 8 — The Falcons are gamers, but Redbank is better.
• Grove City 55, Franklin 8 — The Eagles beat Franklin 91-12 last season. This one shouldn’t be quite that lopsided.•
Summit Academy 19, Apollo-Ridge 12 — The first win for the Knights.Scoop could throw for 300 yards in an NFL game these days.
