Help on way for those using parking app

Pango employees will be available

Help is on the way for anyone confused by the city parking authority’s new smartphone app.

Representatives from Pango Mobile Parking will be in the city next week to help parkers set up and use the app, which officially launches Tuesday.

The app will be tested in the tier garage and the South McKean Street deck for about 60 days before the authority begins to implement the service in other lots and street parking.

Dani Shavit, COO of Pango, was at the parking authority’s meeting Wednesday night to brief the board on the app.

Shavit said there were some “hiccups” with Pango adding the city to its service last week, but said those have been resolved.

But Shavit said there may be some bumps in the road during the first couple weeks while people adjust to using the app.

“You may hear people shouting or complaining during the first couple days,” he said. “That’s normal.”

Pango will soon be installing signs in the tier garage and South McKean Street deck for the app. Each meter will have a decal specifying the zone number for the service.

Shavit said fliers and brochures will be distributed in the parking lots during the next week, and that Pango employees will be around to help anyone with questions.

The employees will be wearing bright orange shirts and hats with the Pango brand on the front.

“They will be impossible to miss,” Shavit said.

Pango also will be training city employees this week to better understand how the app works and how to enforce parking rules with it.

Permit parkers in the two lots will be required to sign up for the service. Once the service is live throughout the city, all permit parkers will need to register for the service.

Those who use metered parking will have the option to use the service or continue paying with quarters.

There are about 540 permitted spots and about 1,100 metered spaces citywide.

The Pango service will come with an added cost for parkers.

Buying a permit will cost $1 per transaction. The fee is the same regardless of the number of monthly permits bought at the time.

There also will be a 10-cent fee for each meter parking session, meaning a session that would cost $1 in quarters will cost $1.10 with the app.

Users will be billed monthly.
