Red Cross help reaches near, far

The American Red Cross aims to ease suffering in the face of emergencies — coming to the aid of those who have been impacted by everything from house fires to devastating hurricanes.

In this area, the American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania Region responds to more than 2,200 disasters every year. Most of those are house fires.

Last month, at least two families in our area needed help that the Red Cross can provide.

A Connoquenessing Township couple, along with their six dogs, were displaced after an electrical fire swept through their single-wide mobile home on Hoot Owl Road. There were no injuries, but their home was uninhabitable. Earlier in the month, a Seven Fields family was displaced after their home on Graywyck Drive was destroyed by fire.

Both were helped by the American Red Cross, in addition to many others throughout this region.

Red Cross volunteers from this area were deployed to the southeast corner of the country this year to help people impacted by enormous disasters to rebuild their lives. More than 100 Red Cross volunteers were sent to help with Hurricane Milton, which impacted Florida and Georgia, and Hurricane Helene, which also hit those states but also affected North Carolina and South Carolina, said Jorge Martinez, executive director of the American Red Cross Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter.

They can’t do it without the continued support from donors — those who are able to make donations of cash, blood, platelets, clothing and food.

This time of year, as we approach the holidays, disasters big and small seem to have more of an emotional impact and it’s good to remember the work they do as we lend our support to various charitable efforts.

During the holidays, when we’re all looking for ways to give back to our communities and to those less fortunate than ourselves, the American Red Cross is an important organization to remember.
