The Butler County Conservation District is having its 2006 tree seedling sale.

To order your seedlings, pick up a form at the district's office at 122 McCune St.

To plant that new seedling, follow these instructions:

- Dig a large-enough hole.

- With the tree in place, partially fill the hole.

- Pack soil with mallet, stone or hand before final filling.

- Fill hole with remaining soil and press firmly. Be careful not to injure the tree.

- A properly planted tree will have that proper placement of the soil collar and the root collar.

- If the tree is planted too deep, it may die. If the hole is too shallow, roots are cramped. It may grow too slowly and could also die. A shallow-planted tree will also suffer in hot weather.

- If the soil is not properly packed around the roots, air spaces are left, and the tree will probably die.
