The corner of West Penn and North Washington streets used to be a residential neighborhood with old homes. In this photograph in the Butler Eagle on April 10, 1965, the land had been cleared in preparation to build the Butler YMCA. The $1.5 million YMCAopened in the spring of 1968. It was renovated in the spring of 1999 to add a fitness center, a warm water instructional pool, a whirlpool and an additional gymnasium. There also is a smaller YMCA on Route 19 in Jackson Township, which will be closing soon. It will be replaced by the 80,000 square foot Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA, which will open on Nov. 4 in Cranberry Township.
