On Dec. 13, 1965, there was a heated slot car race between siblings David and Cheryl Davis at the former Montgomery Ward Department Store on Main Street. The Butler Eagle reported then that slot cars would be a hot item for Santa's bag, and may even replace the classic railroad tracks around the Christmas tree. The slot race car set cost between $15 and $35 in 1965. Also topping the popular toy charts that year were Army walkie-talkies, James Bond spy pistols, the singing version of Chatty Cathie and Barbie Dolls with bendable legs. For this Christmas, Bob Friedland, public relations manager for Toys 'R' Us, said one of the hot items is the Nintendo Wii, which will give players a virtual experience while allowing them to download their favorite "old school" games. The Nintendo Wii will cost about $250. He said other top Christmas gifts will include the TMX Elmo, $39.99; Fisher Price's Kid Tough Digital Camera, $69.99; and the Imaginarium 115 piece Sound City Railway Train Table, $149.99.
