Sixth grader wins chance to compete in national bee
ALLEGHENY COUNTY — The granddaughter of a Butler Township couple qualified to compete in the National Spelling Bee.
Ellie Pierce, 12, of Murrysville finished first on Saturday at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Spelling Bee. She is the granddaughter of Bill and Rene Pierce of Butler Township.
The sixth grade student at Franklin Regional Middle School correctly spelled "Esperanto" to capture the title and move on to the competition in Washington, D.C., which will be the last week in May.
Ellie Pierce is the daughter of Bo Pierce, a 1981 graduate of Butler High School.
