Students, lawmakers compete in stock game

With Pa. Sen. Mary Jo White, R., are Knoch HIgh School students, from left, Patty Hudeck, Megan Flannery and Megan Sperling.

Students are trying to outtrade three members of the state Legislature in this year's Stock Market Game Legislative Challenge.

In the statewide competition, students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in the stock market, trying to earn as much as possible in 10 weeks.

This year, the students at Knoch High School are trying to earn more than state Sen. Mary Jo White, R-21st. At Butler Catholic School, state Rep. Jane Orie, R-40th, is going head to head with the students.

The legislative challenge is part of the Spring Stock Market Game, sponsored in Butler County by the NexTier Bank Center for Economic Education.

Students at Seneca Valley, Butler, Butler Catholic, Mars and Freeport are working to get the largest stock portfolio. More than 100 teams in Butler and Armstrong counties are participating.

The game concludes with a May 10 banquet at the Conley Resort.

State Rep. Jeff Pyle, R-60th, of Kittanning also is involved.
