Dissident poet Xiang featured at art festival
SLIPPERY ROCK — Dissident artist and poet Huang Xiang will paint the back of a building in the borough and will lead a poetry reading as part of Slippery Rock University's Kaleidoscope arts festival Wednesday to April 29.
Xiang, imprisoned in China several times before relocating to Pittsburgh in 1997, will paint artwork and calligraphy on the back of Images Unlimited Monday to Wednesday.
Xiang will read one of his poems and explain his latest creation at 2:30 p.m. April 23 at Images Unlimited, 126 S. Main St.
He is the resident poet for City of Asylum/Pittsburgh, a nonprofit organization supporting exiled artists. He was imprisoned in China for pro-democracy and human rights writing and writes about politics, love and nature.
