Church gives gift of help
MIDDLESEX TWP — A local church will extend a helping hand to its neighbors in Mars and Valencia this weekend by hosting Community Care Day.
Offered to those in the 16046 and 16059 ZIP codes, the event will offer free oil changes as well as yard work, window washing, painting and other housework to those who need the assistance. There are no income requirements.
More than 35 volunteers are available to do the work, said Joni Kellar, site director of Network of Hope @ Crossway, a ministry at the church.
AutoZone has donated car care supplies, enabling the men of the church to be able to provide 30 free oil changes.
"An oil change can cost someone $25. If we can do that for them, that is money they can spend elsewhere on food or bills," she said.
"Based on our demographics, many of the people in the Mars/Valencia communities fall through the gap of most social and government services," Kellar said.
"Families either earn just over the limit or own their own home — making them ineligible for assistance. ... CrossWay Church is trying to bridge some of those gaps," she said.
"Even two-income families often need help for whatever reason," she said.
Kellar cites many reasons folks might need a hand this spring. "Loss of a job, illness, injury, loss of transportation or having to care for a sick family member could cause residents to fall behind on their yard work, house upkeep or car care."
Kellar said senior citizens and single parents also often benefit from help.
The Rev. Pat Summers of CrossWay said he looks forward to helping neighbors.
"We truly care about the people in our community. We have a heart for them and want to put action behind our words. The Community Care Day is just another way for us to reach out to the community in a tangible way," he explained.
A free car wash in the church parking lot will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"We will have refreshments. Fox's Pizza in Cranberry is donating lunch for volunteers and participants. We've also been blessed with monetary donations to make this all possible," said Kellar.
Information about the church's Angel Food ministry will also be available on Saturday.
"We are planning to launch a program by summer's end that will supply registered families with $80 worth of groceries for only $25," Kellar said.
Those who wish to participate in either program should call Kellar at 724-584-8444.
"It is really all about trying to make life easier for others by giving a gift of help," Keller said.
