Unemployment ticks up a bit
Unemployment rates in Butler County bounced up again in July, new figures show, but remain low.
In July, Butler County had an unemployment rate of 3.6 percent, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry's Center for Workforce Information and Analysis.
The rate rose slightly from June's 3.3 percent and the county's record low 3.2 percent, which was recorded in February and April.
However, the center's analyst Lauren Riegel said the jump is nothing to worry about.
“It seems to be what's happening is we're just hovering around that low area and bouncing around a bit,” Riegel said. “That's what happens when we get to a low point. It's hard to get much lower than your record low.”
The eight-county statistical area's overall unemployment rate, which is calculated slightly differently than individual counties, remained at 3.8 percent. Every county within the area saw slight upticks in their rates similar to Butler County.
The same is true statewide, Riegel said.
“Almost half of the counties had a record low unemployment rate at some point in 2019,” she said.
Alongside county-level rates, the center publishes industry specific data for each metropolitan area. After adjusting for seasonal changes, the Pittsburgh area saw a drop of about 400 jobs in July.
That too, Riegel said, isn't a noteworthy drop off given recent months of good figures.
“The bottom line is, even though we're kind of having a little bit of bouncing around, we're still trending the same way,” Riegel said. “We're still very near record low unemployment and high jobs.”
