The FCA Gems All-Star cheerleaders competed in the recent UCA Regional at Slippery Rock University and came away with three first-place finishes.Pink Ice won the Mini Division, Level 3 (second grade and under); Turquoise in the Youth Division, Level 2 (6th grade and under) and Diamonds in Senior Prep Division, Level 4) grades 5-11).The Diamonds also had the highest score of the All-Star Competition.All three teams scored high enough to get a bid for nationals.
NEW YORK - Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, beating out Oklahoma teammates Adrian Peterson and Jason White, last year's winner.The junior is USC's sixth Heisman winner, tying the Trojans with Ohio State for second-most behind Notre Dame's seven.Peterson, the freshman tailback, was second, followed by two quarterbacks, White and Utah's Alex Smith. Leinart's teammate, tailback Reggie Bush, was fifth.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Charlie Weis was hired Sunday night to coach football at Notre Dame, the school the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator graduated from and where this season's 6-5 record led to the firing of Tyrone Willingham.Weis agreed to a six-year deal that will pay him a reported $2 million per year. He arrived at the school Sunday night just hours after the Patriots beat Cincinnati in Foxboro, Mass.Weis will attempt to restore Notre Dame to the powerhouse program it was when he attended the university as an undergraduate while Ara Parseghian and Dan Devine coached the Fighting Irish. Weis never played for Notre Dame, and graduated in 1978.The door for him to return to Notre Dame opened after Willingham was fired on Nov. 30 with a 21-15 record over three years. Willingham, who coached at Stanford before going to South Bend, returned to the Pac-10 by accepting the job at Washington on Sunday night.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Tiger Woods closed with a 5-under 66 for a two-shot victory over Padraig Harrington to win the Target World Challenge on Sunday.On a pristine day at Sherwood Country Club, Woods finished at 16-under 268. Harrington shot a 66.After ending the PGA Tour season without a stroke-play victory for the first time in his career, Woods now has won the last two stroke-play tournaments he has played - the Dunlop Phoenix by eight shots last month in Japan, and the Target World Challenge, an unofficial event with a 16-man field.
LAS VEGAS - Vitali Klitschko stopped Danny Williams in the eighth round Saturday night to retain his WBC heavyweight title. Klitschko, who owns just one of the three major heavyweight titles, made a case for being the best of the three champions in a dominating effort.
