Former Portersville Christian School student Abby Moose, a senior guard on the Grove City College women's basketball team, scored 20 points for the fifth straight game in a 79-67 win over Thiel.
The Wolverines (15-8, 7-2) won their seventh straight game, the program's longest single-season win streak since 1990. Moose added four assists and three steals in the victory and needs 32 points to move into fifth place on the school's career scoring list.
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Chargers used their franchise tag on quarterback Drew Brees Thursday and will offer him a one-year contract at just more than $8 million. He made $1.56 million in base pay last season, when he led the Chargers out of the NFL's basement to the AFC West title at 12-4.The Chargers needed to put the tag on Brees, the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year, to keep him from leaving as an unrestricted free agent.Brees rebounded from a nightmarish 2003 season to lead the Chargers to their first playoff berth in nine seasons. He also was voted to the Pro Bowl.
BOSTON - New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi suffered a mild stroke but is walking, talking and in good spirits, the team said.Bruschi experienced temporary numbness, blurred vision and headaches Wednesday night and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.The Patriots said Bruschi could be released as early as today.A nine-year NFL veteran, Bruschi is the centerpiece of the Patriots defense that helped the team win three of the past four Super Bowls, including a 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 6.
LOS ANGELES - Two months after finally earning his PGA Tour card by winning Q-school, Brian Davis of England opened the Nissan Open Thursday with an eagle and finished with eight straight pars on his way to a 6-under 65 for the early lead at dreary Riviera Country Club.Luke Donald of England and Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland were among those one shot behind. Brett Quigley made a birdie on the 18th and shot a 66.Two-time defending champion Mike Weir was at 5 under until finding a bunker on his final hole and making bogey, dropping him into a large group at 67.
