IN BRIEF

There will be no state title for Jeff Becker.

The 145-pound Slippery Rock High School wrestler was edged by Donnie Ament of Mount Pleasant 4-3 in the PIAA Class AA semifinal match Friday night.

It was the senior's first loss of the season, but Becker (28-1) still can finish as high as third.

Becker got to the semifinals with a 6-2 win over Eric Smith of Danville.

Things didn't go well for Trevor Gallo, Slippery Rock's senior 171-pound wrestler, either.

Gallo fell to the consolation bracket with a 5-3 loss to Patrick Walsh of Schuylkill Valley in the quarterfinal round.

The loss was Gallo's second of the season and first to a Class AA opponent.

Gallo (31-2) rebounded with a 7-4 decision over Matt Hemhauser of Bangor Pius X in the second-round consolations and then rolled over Justin Parker of Octorara for an 11-0 major decision to move on.

Gallo also can finish as high as third.
