SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock Sliders snared their third consecutive victory, plating the game's only run in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 1-0 decision over the Kalamazoo (Mich.) Kings in Frontier League action Monday.
Jared Simon (1-1) picked up the win while John Brownell (2-3) was charged with the loss.
Slippery Rock (13-36) rapped out seven hits, but stranded 11 runners. The Kings (24-26) mustered just five hits, but left 12 men on base.
The Kings were shut out for the second consecutive game, having lost to the visiting Washington Wild Things 4-0 on Sunday.
CLEVELAND — Manager Eric Wedge received a three-year contract extension from the Cleveland Indians Monday, an early reward for having his ballclub near the top in the AL Central.Wedge, whose Indians didn't reach the playoffs in his first four seasons, was signed through the 2007 season with the club holding a club option for 2008 and 2009.But with Cleveland (54-37) trailing the first-place Detroit Tigers by just one-half game entering the week and leading the wild-card chase, the Indians decided the time was right to extend Wedge's deal through the 2010 season.Financial terms were not immediately available.
NEW YORK — Kansas City defensive end Jared Allen has been suspended by the NFL for the first two games of the 2007 season and fined an additional game check following two DUI arrestsAllen told the Kansas City Star last April that he had been suspended for four games. At that time, the NFL declined to comment because the case was under appeal.
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — Seve Ballesteros officially retired from competition Monday, ending a charismatic career filled with five major golf championships, a record 50 victories on the European Tour and a fighting spirit that reinvigorated Europe in the Ryder Cup.Ballesteros, who turned 50 in April, has not been a force in golf for the last 10 years as he has coped with back injuries.He was torn between trying to keep playing and stepping away, and decided to give it one last chance at the Masters, where he won twice. But he finished last after rounds of 86-80, then tried one event on the Champions Tour.
