DETROIT — Detroit Tigers' infielder Neifi Perez was suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a third time for a banned stimulant, a penalty that finishes his season.
Perez was suspended for 25 games on July 6 when he tested positive for a second time. Under baseball's labor contract, a player who tests positive for the first time is sent for counseling.
His initial suspension cost him $396,175, and the second will cost him $792,350 — a total of $1,188,525 of his $2.5 million salary. He will miss the final 54 games of the regular season and finish serving the suspension next year, if he is signed.
DETROIT — The Detroit Lions gave wide receiver Calvin Johnson a six-year deal worth up to $64 million, a person with knowledge of the contract details told The Associated Press, with just under $27.2 million in guaranteed money.

Michelle Wie's missed cut suggested she's still a long way from her first victory.Wie shot an 80 for a 7-over score of 153 that missed the cut by two.Ochoa went to the 18th with a two-shot lead and faced a 25-foot putt for birdie. Instead of walking off three ahead of the field, the advantage slipped to one as her first putt, hit too strongly, curled 4 feet past and then she missed that to wind up with a bogey.She also missed a putt for eagle at 14 but her 6-under 140 put her one ahead of Wendy Ward (70) and Catriona Matthew (68).
AKRON, Ohio — Rory Sabbatini continued to make a difficult golf course look like a breeze, running off three straight birdies toward the end of his round for another 3-under 67 and a two-shot lead over Masters champion Zach Johnson in the Bridgestone Invitational.
INDIANAPOLIS — Michael Phelps came within a whisker of setting a world record in the 100 backstroke, winning twice in about an hour at the U.S. National Championships.His time of 53.01 seconds was the second-fastest ever, just three-hundreths of a second off Aaron Peirsol's mark set in March at the world championships. Phelps set a meet record in the 200 freestyle.
