IN BRIEF
LINCOLN, Neb. — Hall of Fame coach Tom Osborne returned to Nebraska as interim athletic director Tuesday, a day after the firing of Steve Pederson, who came to the school from Pitt. The 70-year-old Osborne will determine whether football coach Bill Callahan stays or goes, but he won't make the decision until after the season.
Osborne retired as Cornhuskers coach 10 years ago, ending a celebrated 25-year coaching career that culminated with three national championships in his last four seasons. However, the program has fallen on hard times — by Nebraska standards — having lost no fewer than four games a year in four seasons under Callahan.
SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Chargers acquired Chris Chambers from the Miami Dolphins Tuesday in exchange for a 2008 second-round draft pick. The trade came as the Chargers put their No. 1 wide receiver, Eric Parker, on the injured reserved list with a broken right big toe. Parker has been out since June, and will miss the rest of the season.
