WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — A day after he made NASCAR history, Marcos Ambrose nearly did it again.

Ambrose, who won the Nationwide Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International on Saturday to become the first Australian to win a NASCAR race, drove the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford to an impressive third-place finish Sunday in the Centurion Boats at The Glen Cup race after starting last.

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Orlando Hudson underwent surgery late Saturday night to repair a dislocated bone in his left wrist and will miss the remainder of the season.Hudson was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game and right-handed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.Arizona selected outfielder Jeff Salazar from Triple-A Tucson, where he hit .364 in 24 games with four homers and 18 RBIs.

LATROBE — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich on Sunday, choosing the former Jacksonville Jaguars starter over Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowl player.The Steelers signed 28-year-old Leftwich after both he and Culpepper worked out Sunday morning.Leftwich has started 46 games for Jacksonville and Atlanta in his NFL career. He was released by the Falcons in January. He may not be released by the Steelers even when Charlie Batch returns from his fractuired collarbone injury."We're just going to let the play talk,"Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "You know how we do it. We're going to evaluate what we see based on performance."

SPARTA, Ky. — Helio Castroneves wishes he and Scott Dixon would stop meeting like this.Moments after Dixon passed Castroneves in the final yards to win the Meijer Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday, Castroneves climbed out of his Team Penske car and let out an exaggerated sigh."Every time he wins, I finish second," Castroneves said. "Unfortunately, every time I finish second, he's winning too."Dixon's sixth win of the season, combined with Castroneves' seventh runner-up finish, pushed Dixon's lead over Castroneves in the IndyCar season championship race to 78 points with three stops left.

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Ben Curtis will have to ditch the NFL apparel next month for the Stars & Stripes. A runner-up finish in the PGA Championship on Sunday earned him his first trip to the Ryder Cup.
