BOSTON — Dominic DiMaggio, a seven-time All Star who still holds the record for the longest consecutive game hitting streak in Boston Red Sox history, has died at his Massachusetts home. He was 92.
DiMaggio died at about 1 a.m. today, according to his wife, Emily.
Known as the "Little Professor" because of his eyeglasses and his 5-foot-9, 168-pound frame, the younger brother of New York Yankees Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio hit in 34 consecutive games in 1949.
Dom's streak was broken on Aug. 9 when his big brother caught a sinking liner in the eighth inning of a 6-3 Red Sox win over the Yankees.
In addition to his wife, the San Francisco native is survived by three children and six grandchildren.

PHILADELPHIA — Former Phillies manager Danny Ozark, who led Philadelphia to three consecutive National League East titles but fell short of the World Series each time, died Thursday. He was 85.Ozark, whose streak of three consecutive NL East titles in the late 1970s is unmatched in team history, died at his home in Vero Beach, Fla., team officials said.Ozark twice led the Phillies to more than 100 wins, tallying back-to-back 101-61 records in 1976 and 1977. The Phillies went 90-72 under him in 1978 for their third straight NL East title, but lost in the National League Championship Series each time.
PHOENIX — The National Hockey League said Thursday it has been in control of the Phoenix Coyotes since November and is asking a federal judge to throw out the team's bankruptcy filing.NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes signed documents giving control of the team to the league. Daly said the documents specifically prohibit Moyes from taking the franchise into bankruptcy.Daly spoke after a hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on the franchise's filing for Chapter 11 reorganization on Tuesday. The filing, which came as a surprise to the NHL, includes a plan to sell the team to Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie for $212.5 million and move it to southern Ontario. The NHL wants to keep the team in Arizona.
