ANGOLA, Ind. — Authorities say the wife of a professional golfer from Indiana was killed and his children severely injured in a crash on Interstate 69 near Angola, Ind.
The Angola Fire Department says Beth Smith, of Peru, Ind., wife of PGA Tour player Chris Smith, was killed Sunday when the sport utility vehicle she was traveling in collided with a Greyhound bus transporting a Canadian semipro football team.
Chris Smith is a Peru resident and has been competing on the PGA Tour since 1991.
BOSTON — Struggling Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday and could be sidelined much longer.In eight starts, Matsuzaka is 1-5 with an 8.23 ERA and an opponents' batting average of .378. Last season, he was 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA and a major league-best .211 batting average by opponents.
SILVERSTONE, England — The president of motor sports' governing body said on Sunday that legal action against the eight Formula One teams planning a breakaway series will be halted to encourage reconciliation.But in another twist to the standoff threatening to tear F1 apart, FIA president Max Mosley said that his organization would still regulate any rival championship.That's despite the fact that the teams say they want to leave F1 because talks with Mosley over his plans for a $65 million budget cap in 2010 have collapsed.
GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany — Wladimir Klitschko again showed his dominance of the heavyweight division, stopping Ruslan Chagaev in a hastily put together title fight Saturday night before 61,000 fans at a German soccer stadium.The IBF and WBO champion added the Ring Magazine belt to his haul, knocking Chagaev down in the second round and opening a cut over the Uzbekistan-born fighter's left eye in the eighth.Referee Eddie Cotton stopped the fight before the 10th round.
NEVADA CITY, Calif.— Lance Armstrong won the Nevada City Classic, a challenging one-day race in the Sierra Nevada foothills.Armstrong finished ahead of third-place teammate Levi Leipheimer on the repeated 1.1-mile loop through the historic mining town. More than 15,000 fans cheered on the seven-time Tour de France winner on Sunday.Armstrong only committed to the Nevada City Classic five days earlier as he prepares for another run at the Tour de France after a 3½-year absence.
