ATLANTA — The PA Redhawks 16-and-under travel baseball team, featuring a number of players from the Butler County area, finished 3-2 in the 184-team World Wooden Bat Association National Championship in Atlanta last week.
There were 26 pools with six to seven teams in each pool. Only the champion of each pool advanced to the playoffs.
The Redhawks won the first three games in their pool. Tyler Slepski pitched a complete game against the Richmond (Va.) Indians, Bobby Swartwout tossed a complete game against the Jack Cust Diamond Jacks (N.J.) and John Anderson threw a complete game against the Upstate Mavericks (S.C.).
The Redhawks fell short of the playoffs with losses to the Miami (Fla.) Raiders and host East Cobb (Ga.) Astros.
FARMINGTON — Rob McClellan of Butler Country Club is in fifth place, John Aubrey of Aubrey Dubbs Dred is sixth and Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf & Country Club is tied for 10th after two rounds of the Falling Rock Classic at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort's Mystic Rock course.On Monday, McClellan carded a 69 for a two-round total of 139, five strokes behind leader Barry Evans of Berry Hills Country Club and John Pillar of the Country Club at Woodloch Springs.Aubrey fired a 72 for a two-round total of 141 and Boros a 73 for a score of 143.The 60 golfers will wrap up play today
LOS ANGELES — Manny Ramirez moved past Mickey Mantle and into 15th place on the career home run list Monday, hitting a two-run shot off Micah Owings for the 537th of his career in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 7-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds.Ramirez, who tied Mantle on July 10, drove a 2-0 pitch into the left field pavilion in the second inning to give the Dodgers a 6-3 lead.Ramirez's next target is Mike Schmidt at 548.
MADRID — Rafael Nadal is training for the first time since being sidelined by a knee injury. Nadal has been out of action with tendinitis in his right knee since losing to Robin Soderling in the fourth round of the French Open, where the Spaniard had been the four-time defending champion.Nadal is hoping to resume playing at next month's Montreal Masters. He was unable to defend his Wimbledon title, and Roger Federer won his record 15th Grand Slam trophy and retook the No. 1 ranking.
