MECHANICSBURG — Pennsylvania's governing body for high school athletics has voted to keep its enrollment classification system for football intact.
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's board voted 15-13 Friday morning in favor of keeping the current system of four classes, Class A through AAAA. The PIAA voted down a proposal that would have moved to a six-class system for football only and shortened the current 16-week season to 15 weeks.
The current system will remain in place through the end of the 2011-2012 school year.
Rangers' Padilla has swine fluKANSAS CITY, Mo. — Texas Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla tested positive for swine flu Friday, though his symptoms are subsiding and he's expected to make his next start.Padilla was scratched from his start Wednesday against Boston because of flu-like symptoms, and lab reports indicated he had H1N1 influenza A. He is thought to be the first athlete in U.S. major pro sports to be diagnosed with swine flu.Several Rangers players have been hit with the flu this week, including Eddie Guardado, Omar Vizquel and David Murphy. Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was scratched from Friday night's game against Kansas City due to the flu.
INDIANAPOLIS — Top-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia was upset Friday in the quarterfinals of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships, losing 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 to Frank Dancevic.Dancevic, unseeded and seeking his first ATP title, will face third-seed Sam Querrey of the U.S. in Saturday's semifinals. Dancevic defeated fifth-seed Benjamin Becker to make the quarters.Querrey advanced with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Marc Gicquel of France, earning a spot in the semifinals for the third straight year. He has never made the finals.Robby Ginepri beat Alex Bogomolov Jr., 7-5, 6-1 to advance. Ginepri will face another American, John Isner, in Saturday's other semifinal.Isner knocked off Wayne Odesnik 7-5, 6-7 (2), 7-5. The 2-hour, 37-minute match ended when Isner's return hit the top of the net and fell out of Odesnik's reach.
PORTOROZ, Slovenia — Top-ranked Dinara Safina reached the semifinals of the Slovenia Open Friday by beating beat Maria Elena Camerin 6-3, 6-0.She'll play Alberta Brianti of Italy, who defeated Camille Pin of France 6-3, 6-2.Stefanie Voegele routed Rossana De Los Rios 6-1, 6-1 to reach her first WTA semifinal.She will play 2008 champion and fifth-seeded Sara Errani, who ousted wild card Petra Martic 6-1, 6-1.
