Three Butler County Horseshoes League members won their respective classes at the recent Pennsylvania Horseshoes Tournament in Warren County.
April Brandt won the junior championship class with a 4-0 record and a 46.74 percent average. Vince "Butch" Neff won the Men's A Class with a 7-0 record and a 55.92 percentage. Vicki Brandt won the Women's B Class with a 5-1 record and a 37.23 percentage.
The Brandts pitch for H.T.'s Spillway and Neff pitches for O'Donnell's. There were 96 competitors at the state competition, 11 from Butler County.
A team from Pittsburgh went undefeated in winning the double-elimination Labor Day Weekend Adult Baseball Tournament at Pullman Park.There were five extra-inning games in the event, which included games at Highfield Park and Butler County Community College, along with a no-hitter and eight games decided by one run.Saxonburg's Brendan Malone was the tournament MVP and Scott Dunn of Debo's Movers won the home-run hitting contest.
RENO, Nev. — The lawyer for a former Nevada casino worker who has accused Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger of sexually assaulting her says his client will drop her lawsuit if he acknowledges the rape and apologizes.Attorney Cal Dunlap says in a letter to Roethlisberger's lawyers that his client would also like the quarterback to donate $100,000 to the Committee to Aid Abused Women, a Reno nonprofit organization.The woman filed the suit in July accusing the Super Bowl-winning quarterback assaulted her in 2008 in a hotel across the street from a golf course where he was playing in a celebrity tournament.Dunlap says the offer is designed to counter claims made by Roethlisberger's lawyers that his client only filed the lawsuit to get money.
PITTSBURGH — Steelers center Justin Hartwig has signed a four-year contract Tuesday, two days before the season opener with Tennessee at Heinz Field.The Steelers have a policy of not negotiating with players once a season begins, so Hartwig's deal — which runs through 2012 — is likely the last until the offseason.Hartwig enters his second season as the Steelers' center and eighth in the NFL. He has started 79 career games, including some with Tennessee and Carolina.
