ISSY-LES-MOULINEAUX, France — Former top-ranked player Amelie Mauresmo has retired from tennis.

The 30-year-old Frenchwoman, who finished the season ranked No. 21, said today she was quitting the sport for good.

Mauresmo won two Grand Slam titles in 2006, at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. She played her last match in the second round of this year's U.S. Open, losing to Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-4, 6-0.

PITTSBURGH — Former Steelers special teams captain Anthony Madison re-signed with the team Wednesday, one day after being cut by the Indianapolis Colts.The Steelers have struggled in kick coverage all season. They allowed a league-high four kickoff return touchdowns in five games before not permitting one during their 20-17 loss to Baltimore on Sunday.Madison played for Pittsburgh from 2006-08 before being cut during training camp. He played for the Browns and Colts earlier this season.The Steelers released former Ravens cornerback Corey Ivy, who signed with them last week.

PHILADELPHIA — Allen Iverson is rejoining the Philadelphia 76ers.Sixers president Ed Stefanski announced the signing Wednesday on the team's Web site. Iverson is expected to make his debut Monday against the Denver Nuggets.Stefanski says in a news release that the team felt "Allen was the best available free agent guard to help" after the injury to Lou Williams, who will miss up to eight weeks.Iverson, his agent and business manager met with Stefanski, coach Eddie Jordan and two other members of the organization Monday.The 34-year-old Iverson announced his retirement last week after an ill-fated stint with the Memphis Grizzlies. The 10-time All-Star was NBA MVP in 2001 when he led the Sixers to the NBA finals.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Pepper Wilson scored 13 points to lead six Pittsburgh players in double figures and the 19th-ranked Panthers women's basketball team cruised to an 89-37 win over Youngstown State Wednesday night.Katie Popovec had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Pittsburgh (6-0), which never trailed and outrebounded the smaller Penguins 56-26. Jania Sims scored 11 and Sophronia Sallard 10 for the Panthers. Selena Nwude and Shayla Scott also scored 10 apiece, all in the first half.Brandi Brooks had 10 points and seven rebounds to lead Youngstown State (0-6), which trailed 47-19 at halftime.The 6-foot-6 Wilson scored all of her points in 10 minutes in the second half, going 6 for 6 from the field.
