SLIPPERY ROCK — After eight years at Slippery Rock University, men's soccer coach Matt Thompson resigned Thursday to accept the same position at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.
Lees-McRae was the NCAA Division II runner-up last fall, losing in the national championship match to Fort Lewis (Colo.).
Thompson leaves The Rock after guiding the team to its best season. SRU finished 18-4-1, won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament.
Slippery Rock University athletic director Paul Lueken said in a news release that the university will begin a national search for Thompson's replacement immediately.
HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Game Commission will hold a deer management open house in the Northwest Region from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 13 at Brokenstraw Fish and Game Club, 1001 Mead Run Road, Youngsville."Open houses provide a means for the agency to reach out and interact with hunters and other Pennsylvanians whose lives are influenced by deer," said Keith Harbaugh, Game Commission Northwest Region director.
PENN HILLS — Butler Cubs boxer Rick Hartwell (2-1) stopped Chase Segar of Hellman's Boxing in Punxsutawney with a hard body shot in the second round of their Golden Gloves fight last Saturday at Alcoma Golf Club.Hartwell continues in Golden Gloves competition at a date and against an opponent to be announced.
