TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals have agreed to terms with free-agent left guard Alan Faneca on a one-year contract, three days after he was cut by the New York Jets.

The team did not release financial terms Tuesday.

The 33-year-old Faneca played the last two seasons for the Jets and has 128 consecutive starts over the past eight years.

Faneca spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who drafted him in the first round out of Louisiana State in 1998.

Faneca rejoins Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt and offensive line coach Russ Grimm, both former Steelers assistants.

INDIANAPOLIS — University of Washington president Mark A. Emmert became the NCAA's new chief executive Tuesday, ending a search that began in November.Emmert succeeds Myles Brand, who died last September from pancreatic cancer. Brand was the first ex-university president to lead college sports' largest governing body and the first chief executive to die in office.Emmert, who will begin his duties Nov. 1, was given a five-year contract.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Baseball needs to shed its image as a mainly American sport to win back a spot at the Olympics, according the president of the sport's international federation.Riccardo Fraccari said Tuesday baseball must rebrand itself as an international game, and that he sees potential to expand in parts of Europe as well as Africa and the Middle East, where Iraq and Iran have approached him about investing in the sport.
