STORRS, Conn. — Connecticut athletic director Jeff Hathaway announced his retirement, effective immediately, after signing an agreement to leave the school.

Hathaway’s job has been the subject of widespread speculation since the university’s new president, Susan Herbst, initiated an evaluation this summer of the athletic department focusing on academic performance, NCAA compliance and fundraising.

Jim Furyk (67), Alexandre Rocha (66), Paul Casey (67) and Retief Goosen (65) were another stroke back.<B>Maholm placed on 15-day DL</B>PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed starter Paul Maholm on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.The move, retroactive to Aug. 18 is the first trip to the DL in Maholm’s career.The 29-year-old left-hander is 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA this season. He gave up three runs in five innings in his last start, a 7-2 loss.
