SAN MARTIN, Calif. — Butler Country Club head golf professional Rob McClellan helped the United States build a 6-2 lead over Great Britain-Ireland as the 25th annual PGA Cup got under way Friday.
Teaming with Marty Jertson in four-ball play against GBI’s Craig Goodfellow and Robert Giles, McClellan’s duo went 1-up in the morning round to earn a point for the Americans.
Three other duos went up against each other on the day. Play was scheduled to continue Saturday at Cordevalle in San Martin, Calif.
The United States has never lost this event on American soil.
NEW YORK — The NFL says it has “enhanced” its pat-down procedure for fans entering stadiums to improve safety.The league has asked all 32 teams to have stadium security search fans from the ankles to the knees. Previously, fans were patted down from the waist up for banned items such as alcohol and weapons.Last week, a man was arrested for using an illegal stun gun at Sunday night's Dallas Cowboys-New York Jets game.<B>Texans' Foster expected to play</B>HOUSTON — Houston coach Gary Kubiak expects running back Arian Foster to play on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.Foster returned to practice this week after missing the season opener because of a left hamstring injury. Kubiak says Foster “looks ready to play.”Foster, who ran for 1,616 yards last season to lead the league, has been bothered with the injury for a month.<B>Wilson, Rose share BMW lead</B>LEMONT, Ill. — Mark Wilson and Justin Rose are tied for the lead going into the weekend at the BMW Championship.Wilson, who considers Cog Hill a home course after he moved to Chicago, ran off four consecutive birdies around the turn and wound up with a 5-under 66. Rose had a wild finish, making an eagle on the 15th hole to reclaim a share of the lead and finishing with a 68.They were at 11-under 131 and had a two-shot lead over Webb Simpson, the leader in the FedEx Cup who has won two of his last three tournaments.<B>Thompson gets lead in LPGA</B>PRATTVILLE, Ala. — Lexi Thompson shot a 4-under 68 to take the lead after two rounds of the Navistar LPGA Classic.The 16-year-old is at 10-under 134, two shots ahead of Stacy Lewis and Becky Morgan.Meena Lee, who came within one shot of tying the course record with an 8-under 64, is third at 7-under 137.
