Rose Snyder and Emily Wolfarth will be swimming at Penn State University next season.

But over the next few weeks, they both have a chance to add to their already impressive high school resumes.

The Seneca Valley seniors are preparing for the WPIAL Class AAA Championships Tuesday and Wednesday at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool.

Snyder will be swimming the 100-yard freestyle (53 seconds) and the 200 freestyle (1:54.75) while Wolfarth will compete in the 200 freestyle (1:56.09) and the 500 freestyle (5:01.79).

Both swimmers have had strong performances at previous district championships, including Snyder's second-place finish in the 200 freestyle and third-place finish in the 100 freestyle last year.

But for Snyder, it's never been about placement.

"I've said this every year, I'm focused on times and hopefully, I'll get some personal records," she said.

Wolfarth helped last year's 200 freestyle relay team place third and the 400 freestyle relay take fourth.

The talent Seneca Valley will send to Trees Pool is not limited to just two stars.

Although she's only a freshman, Abby Myers will be seeded near the top in both the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

An example of how talented Myers is can be found in her time in the butterfly.

Last year's WPIAL champion, Moon's Zina Grogg, finished the event in 57.71 seconds, more than a full second slower than Myers' seed time of 56.69 this season.

Also swimming for Seneca Valley will be sophomores Julie Titley, Hollie Miller, Leah Patinski, Angela Panza and freshman Makena Lynch.

"We feel we have three of the top swimmers in the state (Snyder, Wolfarth and Myers)," said SV coach Tom Donati. "When you're going to WPIALs with a team like that and you're able to fill in around them with the other girls we have, it's pretty exciting."

SV's girls will have a team competing in all three relay events, but it's his 200 freestyle squad that Donati has very high hopes for.

The team, which consists of Wolfarth, Miller, Titley and Snyder, has a seed time of 1:40.

"We'll probably be seeded third or fourth," Donati said.

Butler also has a veteran of the WPIAL meet making her final appearance in senior Brittany Vogel.

Her best showing was an eighth-place effort in the backstroke last season.

She earned a trip to the state championship meet in the 200 individual medley with a 10th-place finish as a junior.

"I'd love to send her out the door with another trip to states," said Butler coach Jeff Armstrong. "She barely missed going last year in the backstroke."

Butler also will be represented by Brianna Keelan, Morgan Morrison, Jordan McElhaney, Renee Clouse, Kristen Campbell and Alyssa Pullekines.

McElhaney, Clouse, Campbell and Pullekines will swim the 200 medley relay.

Vogel, Keelan, Morrison and McElhaney will swim the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

Boys

Dan Gutmann has been to the WPIAL meet before.

But this year he's armed with a bit more confidence.

The Seneca Valley junior will be swimming the 50 freestyle (22.68), 100 breaststroke (1:04.69) and a leg on both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

"This is the first year he has trained like he knows how to train," said Donati. "And this is the first year he realizes what it takes to be successful."

Along with confidence, Gutmann also is serving himself a piece of humble pie.

"Getting to states is always a possibility," he said. "But you don't want to set it as a sure thing because anything can happen. Just do the best you can, and if that's good enough for states, more power to it."

Senior Bobby Beahm, who has been to the WPIAL meet before, also will be swimming for SV, along with Anthony Geyer, Eric Peirce, Tyler Piedimonte, Justin Pritchard and Connor White.

This will be Jason Clouse's first trip to WPIALs in an individual event, but the Butler junior said his experience in relays will benefit him.

Clouse swam on the Golden Tornado's 200 medley relay team two years ago.

This time around, he will head the team's 400 freestyle relay squad, as well as swim the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle on his own.

"I'm not too concerned about it," Clouse said of making his first individual appearance. "I know what to expect and what it feels like to be on the deck."

The only other Butler boys swimmer to compete individually will be Erik Bergh in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Clouse, Hans Bergh, Erik Bergh and Alex Bauer will team up in the 400 freestyle relay.

The WPIAL Class AAA Championships begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's events will include the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle relay. All other events will be contested Wednesday.

A Class AA preview (Mars, Knoch and Freeport) will appear in Sunday's Eagle.
