Knoch 7th grader is audience's choice

Jessica Ortiz of Penn Township won the Audience Choice Award at the Kean Idol Amateur Talent Contest vocal competition. She performed Susan Boyle's “Who I Was Born to Be.”

GIBSONIA — Jessica Ortiz, a seventh grade student at Knoch Middle School, captured the Audience Choice Award at the Kean Idol Amateur Talent Contest vocal competition finals Friday in the Kean Theatre at St. Barnabas.

Jessica sang Susan Boyle's “Who I Was Born to Be.”

She received the most votes from the audience of all acts that performed at the championship round.

Her prize includes four hours of studio recording time with Audible Images Recording Studio and a portrait session with Rick Armstrong Photography.

Jessica is the daughter of Ron and Carolyn Ortiz of Penn Township.

Lynnsey Garlick of Peters Township won the Judges' Choice Award. Selected as first runner-up based on judges' scores was Katie Colosimo, 16, of Wexford.

Another Butler County youth, Jordan Luntz, 13, of Saxonburg was selected as second runner up based on judges' scores.

She performed “Broadway Baby.”

Jordan also is a seventh grader at Knoch Middle School.Madeleine O'Neil of Pine Township was presented with the first Jackie Evancho Award by 2008 and 2009 Kean Idol finalist and “America's Got Talent” star Jackie Evancho.Other Butler County contestants who performed at the vocal championships were: Amanda Sybert, 15, of Butler; Lena Skeele, 13, of Slippery Rock; the duet of Lily Cogley, 15, of Butler and Nick Kerpsack, 16, of Ellwood City; and Marlee Manuel, 16, of Connoquenessing.The vocal championship round capped six weeks of competition that began in January. Separate contests were held for Kean Idol dancers and adult vocalists. Altogether, nearly 150 singing and dancing acts participated.Proceeds benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund.
