PITTSBURGH — The new Sky Deck atop the FliteZone Theater at the National Aviary has opened, giving an up close view of the art of falconry.

The birds include lanner falcons and black kites. The young falcons, which were brought to the aviary from a zoo in Canada, have been trained by the aviary staff.

Dillon, the National Aviary’s martial eagle, will also take flight. Martial eagles are massive birds of prey native to sub-Saharan Africa. The aviary is the only zoo in the United States to fly a martial eagle.

Sky Deck shows will launch daily at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., weather permitting, and will run through Labor Day weekend.

The shows are open to visitors age 6 and older. Space is limited to 50 guests per show.

The aviary at 700 Arch St., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

General admission is $13 for adults, $12 for senior citizens, $11 for children ages 2 to 12, and free for those under 2.
