Butler police put ‘Zero tolerance’ policy in place for e-bikes
The City of Butler released a document Thursday, July 23, announcing a zero-tolerance policy for e-bikes and electric scooters in the city that don’t follow traffic laws.
A flyer, which is available on the city’s website, says the policy is being put in place because of “a concerning rise in electric scooter and e-bike incidents in the area” that have led to serious injury.
Police will issue citations or even confiscate the rides of people who break the rules laid out on the flyer. Parents will be held responsible if their children are caught breaking the rules of the road on an electric ride.
E-bikes are allowed on public roads but riders must be at least 16 years old. They must follow traffic laws and keep speeds of under 20 mph. They must be outfitted with lights for riding at night, under 100 pounds with an engine under 750 watts and have pedals.
Electric scooters are not permitted on public roads. The flyer cites Pennsylvania law on this policy.
