Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528 near the intersection of routes 8 and 173, will host a presentation by Jim and Lynda Reich of HoneySweet Apiaries and the Pennsylvania Backyard Beekeepers at 10 a.m. Aug. 20. During this free program, participants will discover what makes the queen bee special, unravel the mysteries of the honey bee society, learn the basics of how to keep bees, try out real beekeeping equipment and taste honey from HoneySweet Apiaries. No advanced registration is needed. Jennings is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Moraine State Park, Muddy Creek Township, will be the site of “Bats in Action” at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Meet the park naturalist at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Route 528 to see a bat condo in action and explore the wonders of these nighttime insectivores. Take blankets, bug protection and chairs. The Historic Oil Well will be in operation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The abandoned turn-of-the-last-century oil well and pumping engine that have been restored to working order will be demonstrated. REGIONMcConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, just over the county line into Lawrence County off Route 422, will be the site of a program called “Survive Outdoors” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Participants can learn basic skills necessary to survive outdoors, including fire building, keeping protected from the weather, obtaining pure drinking water and signaling for help. Meet in Kildoo picnic area. The gristmill is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays with interpretive tours offered at 1 and 3 p.m. each day. The gristmill will also be open from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays with tours at 1 and 2 p.m. Call 724-368-3612 to confirm programs.
