Rocking the world
PITTSBURGH — “Guitar: The Instrument That Rocked the World” features interactive displays about the science of sound, guitar models from the rare to the innovative, plus the world's largest playable guitar, all available to the public beginning Saturday at the Carnegie Science Center.
In this touring exhibition from The National Guitar Museum, visitors will experience the science, sound, and cultural impact of the guitar in an exhibition that contains more than 60 instruments — ranging from the rare and antique to the popular and innovative — along with hands-on interactive displays, models, touchscreens, performance videos, audio and photographs.
And just for fun, there's the world's largest playable guitar, as certified by Guinness World Records. At more than 40 feet long, youngsters can even climb on it.
“Guitar” runs through Sept. 30.
The exhibit will travel to 15 to 20 cities over the next five years before becoming the basis of the National Guitar Museum in its permanent home, which will be chosen at the end of the tour.
An All-Star Acoustic Jam will coincide with the opening of the exhibit in Pittsburgh.
Four well-known Pittsburgh musicians — Joe Grushecky of The Houserockers, Rick Witkowski of B.E. Taylor Group, Rob James of The Clarks, and
Billy Price of The Billy Price Band — will take the stage together for the first time Saturday.Tickets for this over-21 party, which starts at 8 p.m., are $25 in advance. The deadline to buy advance tickets is noon Friday. Tickets, if available, will be sold at the door for $30.Admission to the science center is $17.95 for adults and $11.95 for children ages 3 to 12.
