Dramatic lines and emphasis on the virtues of individual flowers characterize Asian flower design. Students in a class at the Maridon Museum can create their own arrangements July 21.

The Maridon Museum has planned interactive classes and a travel series for the summer.

Classes include:

• Japanese brush painting, 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays July 12 to 26.

Laurie Bloomberg of Slippery Rock returns to the Maridon to teach sumi, or brush painting.

Cost is $20 for all three classes. Materials are included in the fee. This class is for age 8 and older.

• Asian flower design, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 21.

New Maridon instructor Nancy Engle will teach this class on Asian flower arranging. She has taught flower design at many colleges including Butler County Community College and Slippery Rock University.

Participants will take home their arrangements.

Cost is $35, which includes materials and lunch.

The travel series will feature three speakers:

• The Everest experience — Nepal, by Ray Rossi, 6:30 p.m. July 11.

Rossi is a retired middle school geography teacher, and for the past 15 years he has been indulging in his passion for hiking and travel.

• Uganda, by Susan Linville, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22.

Linville will talk about her time in Uganda, where she traveled to meet her friend Twesigye Jackson Kaguri with whom she co-authored the book “A School for My Village.”

• India, with Craig Carnahan, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13.

Carnahan will share stories about his summer spent in India. He traveled to southern India to help teach English to orphaned children.

Also coming Nov. 1, Zelda Wilbert will give a talk on Mexico.

The Maridon, at 322 N. McKean St., is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays.

Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students, and free for children younger than 8. Tours are available with advance notice.
