The Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania has planned the following events at the Succop Conservancy, 185 W. Airport Road, Penn Township. Some programs are free and some have small fees. Call 412-963-6100 or visit www.aswp.org to register. “Year of Useful Plants” will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, a VNA butterfly release is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday, “Fledglings: Cricket Cacophony” is scheduled from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Sept. 18, and a naturalist led morning walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 13, 20 and 27.
Moraine State Park hosts historic oil well demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 13 at the central powerhouse site beyond the forestry and regional office building on Park Road off Route 528. Call 724-368-8811.
Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528, Brady Township, hosts an outdoor adventure workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for those 12 and older. The workshop will cover basic map, navigation and compass skills, plus time on a basic orienteering course. Registration is free, but is required by today by calling 724-794-6011, or online at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/Calendar. Jennings is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset.
Moraine Preservation Fund conducts summer cruises on its Nautical Nature pontoon boat from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 28. There also are Wednesday pizza cruises that begin at 5 p.m. Fees are involved. Call 724-368-9185 or 724-368-8811 for reservations.
McConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, will be the site of “Art in the Park” from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, a historic bread baking class from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 22, and “A Taste of History: Dutch Oven Cooking” from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 16. Register by calling 724-368-8811. The mill is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through October. Admission is free.
