Reception kicks off dual show at Art Center

“Shepherdess” by Leah Mitchell

The artwork of Leah Mitchell of Chicago and David Todd of Butler will be displayed Friday through Nov. 16 at The Art Center, 344 S. Main St. A reception is planned for 7 p.m. Friday.

Mitchell is a fourth generation artist. Her great-grandmother, Evelyn Offutt Nicholas was a well-known portrait painter from Butler, along with her grandmother, two great aunts and one aunt.

Mitchell works and teaches from a historic cottage that she uses as a studio in Aurora, Ill.

She paints in the classical realist style. She received a bachelor’s in history from North Central College of Naperville, Ill., in 2001, after which she pursued classical training in art at the School of Representational Art in Chicago.

She created and moderates an online forum for other representational painters. Her work can be seen at www.leahmitchell.com.

Todd earned a bachelor of fine arts at Slippery Rock University and a master of fine arts from Stephen F. Austin State University of Texas in painting and drawing.

He teaches painting, drawing and sculpture at Butler County Community College and Penn State University-Beaver.

His abstract expressionist works include a combination of drawing, painting and assembling that become more like sculpture and are called mixed media constructions.

The Associated Artists of Butler County are presenting the Regional Faculty Art show Tuesday through Nov. 15 at the Cranberry Township Municipal Center. A reception will be held Nov. 6 in Cranberry. Sixty pieces were chosen to go from the Regional Faculty Art Show at The Art Center to travel to the Cranberry showing, where cash awards will be presented at the reception.

The annual holiday show and sale will open Nov. 22 at The Art Center.

Regular Art Center hours are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free. Call 724-283-6922 or visit www.aabcArtCenter.com.
