Modern Take SRU presents 'Richard III'
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” provides a modern twist on the historical monarch.
The play opens Friday and runs through Nov. 21 at the University Union.
“Richard III,” directed by SRU professor of theater David Skeele, provides a 90-minute modern take on the classic that accelerates through a montage of murder and materialism.
Skeele’s version critiques the American obsession with beauty and the power associated with status. Characters appear in ostentatious costumes symbolizing the cult of celebrity and what Skeele calls the “aristocracy of physical attractiveness.”
The modern twist includes a historical interpretation of Richard III and his times.
SRU art, music, dance and history majors are collaborating with theater majors to provide this historical sketch of the monarch through display, music, video and dance.
The real-life “Richard III” (1452-1485) was king of England from 1483 until his death and is regarded by some as England’s meanest ruler.
Those who attend the show will experience live music in the lobby, video animation created by art students and an exhibit set up by history majors.
Malic Williams, a theater major from Aliquippa, will portray Richard of Gloucester. Also in the cast is Casey Reiland, a safety management major from Harrisville.
Alex Barnhart, a senior theater-design technology major from Butler, is the sound designer.
Opening night begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday. There are no Saturday performances. Other performances will be at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday and at 7:30 p.m. Monday through Nov. 21.
Tickets are $7 for students and $12 for general admission. Call 724-738-2645.
