The annual Christmas Bird Count centered at Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park will be Saturday. There also will be a bird count in the South Butler area on Jan. 4. Visit www.aswp.org/birding/ChristmasBirdCount.html.

Jennings Environmental Education Center, Route 528, Brady Township, will be the site of a First Day hike at 1 p.m. Jan. 1, starting from the prairie trails parking lot. The 2-mile hike will be of moderate difficulty. The program is free and registration is not required. Jennings is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Call 724-794-6011.

Moraine State Park will be the site of a First Day Hike beginning at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 1 from McDanel’s Launch on the North Shore. Members of the Butler Outdoor Club will conduct the 2- to 3-mile hike over moderate terrain on the North Country Trail. Also, registration for the fourth annual Moraine Preservation Fund Chili Cook Off on Jan. 18 is being taken at morainepreservationfund.org/category/schedule/3.html. Call 724-368-8811.
