Chick checkups
The two African penguin chicks hatched Dec. 15 and 18 at the National Aviary underwent their first medical exams recently, including checks of each chick's heart, lungs, eyes, beak and weight. A feather sample was collected for DNA testing, the only way the sex of the chick can be determined. One chick is examined at right. Below are the protective parents.
