Bright flowers bloom at Phipps

Bright blooms grace the Spring Flower Show opening Saturday at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.

PITTSBURGH — Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens takes the adage “April showers bring May flowers” to new heights as the theme of its Spring Flower Show 2015.

After another cold winter, the exhibit, which opens Saturday, celebrates rain and its role in the natural world of bright blooms.

Visitors can also take a piece of the show home with them by participating in a used bulb sale from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 28 and April 11 and 25.

As part of the show, there will be a number of botanical surprises, including the rare Himalayan poppies, a blue variety that is notoriously difficult to grow, as well as the new Viola Hip Hop Cranbunny.

Along with seasonal favorites like tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and lilies, highlighted will be a variety of primula, snapdragons, delphiniums, and the Poor Man’s Orchid, a flower guests do not often get to see on display.

The spring show will run through April 12. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and until 10 p.m. Fridays.

Admission is $15 for adults, $14 for senior citizens and students, and $11 for children ages 2 to 18. For more information, visit, phipps.conservatory.org.
