The Butler County Early Care and Education Council has big plans for preschool children during the Week of the Young Child, which is this week.

Events target literacy development in children from 3 to 6 years old, and focus on the book “Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job,” by Stephen R. Swinburne. The book encourages children to guess which shoe matches which job.

Five hundred copies of the book will be given free to children.

From 6 to 8 p.m. today events are scheduled for the Butler Area Public Library. About 25 organizations will provide activities for children and offer information to their families on the main floor.

At 7 p.m., Lani Cataldi of the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh offers a family show in the library's auditorium.

On Thursday, “Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job,” will be read at the Cranberry Township Public Library at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Also on Thursday, the North Trails Library in West Sunbury will celebrate from 2 to 3:30 p.m. “Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job,” will be read, children can enter a drawing to win a free pair of shoes, and they will play Community Helper bingo.

On Friday, the Butler YMCA will celebrate Healthy Kid's Day from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Children may participate in fitness challenges, get health screenings and safety information and play games.

All week, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., artwork from children at the Children's Creative Learning Center at Butler County Community College will be on display in the college's AK Steel Lobby.

A $2,000 grant from Target supports the Butler County events.

A $40,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation will get a copy of “Whose Shoes? A Shoe for Every Job,” to more than 15,000 children's programs statewide.
