Fraternity task force taking time to set upSTATE COLLEGE — Penn State officials say it’ll take longer than they expected to establish a task force on the school’s fraternities and sororities.The school said Thursday there has been considerable interest from people who want to serve on the panel.University President Eric Barron is setting up the group in response to a police investigation into a secret Facebook site linked to a Penn State fraternity that had photos of naked and semi-nude women, some asleep or passed out.Barron had said he hoped to set up the task force this week.It’ll include students, alumni, faculty, administrators, local residents and national fraternity and sorority organizations.

Student will plead in shower video casePITTSBURGH — A defense attorney says a former Carnegie Mellon University student will plead guilty to charges he made video recordings of fellow male students in dormitory showers.Attorney Robert Leight made that announcement Wednesday after 19-year-old Daniel Jorge of East Williston, N.Y., waived his right to a preliminary hearing on invasion of privacy charges.Leight says he’s hopeful Jorge will receive some kind of probation and court-ordered counseling.He says his client “knows he was wrong” and is already in counseling.Police say Jorge had videos of more than 30 male students on his iPhone and computer hard drive before he was arrested last month.

Prank shooting text spurs investigationSTATE COLLEGE — Police and school officials are investigating after a central Pennsylvania high school student sent her mother an April Fools’ text about a shooting — only to have the mother call 911.State College police say officials quickly determined the text was meant to be a joke.But before that happened, seven officers joined a school resource officer and the school district and police began following a planned response to a school shooting.State College Area School District spokesman Chris Rosenblum says, “The protocols worked on both sides. The district followed them to the letter.”Officials aren’t identifying the student.

Another Penn State fraternity gets closedSTATE COLLEGE — A Penn State fraternity is closed after officials concluded it violated penalties imposed over hazing, alcohol use and other behavior.The national headquarters of Pi Kappa Phi said Thursday it moved to shut down the chapter because members did not follow the group’s standards of conduct.The suspension comes as local police are investigating a different Penn State fraternity for a secret Facebook page that contained naked or semi-nude photographs of women.The university’s Interfraternity Council said the Pi Kappa Phi chapter has been charged with violating rules about hazing, alcohol use, disorderly conduct, providing accurate information and registering social functions. The chapter can’t return for at least three years.
