Raiders hoping to build on Lee's performance
The Seneca Valley football team received a performance it could build on last week.
Now it's up to the Raiders to do something with it.
Senior quarterback Marshall Lee passed for 145 yards in last week's 35-3 loss at Kiski Area, most of them coming against the Cavaliers' first team defense.
The last time a Raiders' quarterback passed for as many yards was Sept. 29, 2000, when Justin Ziegler threw for 206 in a 30-20 loss to Bethel Park.
Lee will attempt to continue his success through the air, and more importantly help his team to its first win of the season Friday when the Raiders host Bethel Park in the Quad North opener for both squads.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
"I think their quarterback is definitely improving," said Bethel Park coach Jeff Metheny. "He showed last week that he can make plays through the air.
"Plus their wide receiver (Zach Duggan) showed some quickness after making the catch."
Duggan caught seven passes for 100 yards against Kiski Area.
Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle knows that a strong running game is integral to his team's success.
"We'd still like to go out and establish a running game," he said. "And our passing game could complement that. But the bottom line is we're willing to do whatever it takes to be successful."
Senior tailback Evan Braithwaite leads Seneca Valley with 124 yards on 33 carries and is running behind an inexperienced line.
"Not one of our starting offensive linemen started a game before this season," said Butschle. "They're improving, but it's an inexperienced group."
Junior tailback Pat Prazer missed last week's game with a high ankle sprain, but will be ready for action Friday.
The Black Hawks will defend with a seven-man front. Leaders include three seniors - defensive tackle Todd Jones (6-4, 255) and linebackers Scott Brucker (6-1, 203) and Justin Starkey (5-10, 200).
"On defense we read and rely on our kids to get to the ball and make plays," Metheny said. "It's worked pretty well for us over the last few years."
Bethel Park's defense did suffer a setback last week against a potent Penn-Trafford attack in a 31-24 loss.
The Black Hawks surrendered touchdown passes of 58, 28 and 19 yards as Penn-Trafford quarterback Tyler Huether passed for 266 yards.
Bethel Park's offense is led by senior running back B.J. Bytner, who has rushed for two scores this season along with a touchdown reception.
"B.J. scored 10 touchdowns for us last season," said Metheny. "So he's shown he is a kid who can get it in the end zone."
After missing the first game with an injury, senior halfback Chris Boris returned last week in style, sprinting for an 81-yard touchdown run.
Going up against a running team could mean trouble for the Raiders, who have given up 484 rushing yards in just two games.
"It's real simple," said Butschle. "We have to tackle better. Just from watching film, we can see that our guys are in position, but they just aren't making the tackles."
Bethel Park at Seneca Valley
Friday 7:30 p.m.
Streak: The Raiders have lost four straight to Bethel Park. Their last win came in 1995.
Stat: Evan Braithwaite's 124 rushing yards lead the Raiders. The rest of the team has combined for 28 yards on 21 carries.
Strategy: The Black Hawks will look for a balanced attack with running backs B.J. Bytner and Chris Boris and quarterback L.J. Michalski.
Speaking: "Bethel's defense likes to give opponents a few different looks during the course of a game. Hopefully, Marshall (Lee) will be able to make some plays against them." - Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle
