HARRISBURG — Senate Republicans warned Tuesday that they will not go along with Gov. Tom Wolf if he moves to keep Col. Marcus Brown in place indefinitely as acting state police commissioner now that the Senate has rejected Brown’s nomination.

Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman said he will not consider taking the matter to court before he knows how Wolf plans to deal with Brown. Wolf deserves time to figure out his next move, Corman said.

But Corman, R-Centre, said the Democratic governor needs to respect the confirmation process and select a new nominee.

“I think the constitution is very clear,” Corman said. “The governor nominates, we advise and consent. I would not think it would be appropriate for the governor to ignore us, as it would not be appropriate for us to ignore him. We made our vote, and he needs to respect that and move on.”

On Tuesday, Wolf reiterated that he has not decided whether to resubmit Brown’s nomination.

Monday’s 26-22 rejection of Brown, largely along partisan lines, was the first time in the memory of current Senate officials that the chamber rejected a governor’s nominee in a floor vote. Three Republicans crossed party lines to vote with all 19 Democrats in supporting Brown.

The vote does not change Brown’s status as acting commissioner, a position he has held since January.
