Pittsburgh police move about a crime scene along Route 51 on Monday. Police say a gun-wielding man engaged in a firefight with officers after shooting a woman and hijacking a car in an attempt to get away.

PITTSBURGH — A rifle-wielding man killed in a shoot-out with Pittsburgh police on a busy highway has been identified as a suspected drug dealer with a history of other run-ins with police.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office says the dead man was 20-year-old Tyrone Dale Harris Jr. He had just posted bail Friday on drug-dealing and weapons charges.

Police responded just after 10 a.m. Monday to reports of a man walking with a gun and firing at people, and then that the same man had carjacked a vehicle.

Police say Harris fired at another car on Route 51 with two people inside, injuring a man in the shoulder.

The suspect then shot out a sheriff deputy’s windshield and then got out of his car when he became stuck in traffic and fired at approaching officers, who returned fire, killing him.
