Seneca Valley Middle School teacher Joseph Koromaus had his head shaved in front of the entire school Thursday. Koromaus wanted to show support for his sister, who was diagnosed with cancer late last year.

JACKSON TWP — A Seneca Valley Middle School teacher Thursday morning had his head shaved in front of the entire school, all in the name of charity.

Joseph Koromaus, who teaches social studies at the school, decided to participate in the head-shaving after his sister was diagnosed with cancer late last year.

His sister went through surgery and chemotherapy and, in the process, lost all of her hair. That's when Koromaus came up with the idea to raise money for the American Cancer Society by involving his students.

“I wanted to show my support for my sister, and I told her I would shave my head because she was feeling down about it,” he said.

The idea was that students would have a weeklong period to donate to the cause. For every dollar a student donated, he or she would get a ticket thrown into the mix.

Koromaus on Thursday during a school assembly picked the winning ticket, and the winning student got to come on stage to shave the teacher's head.

Students raised $320 in the process, money that was given directly to an American Cancer Society representative on hand Thursday morning.

Koromaus said it was a fun event for the students at the end of the school year, but that he also hoped to instill a lesson they wouldn't forget.

“We wanted to make sure they understood that, no matter where they are, there's always someone else in worse shape, and to try to help those people,” he said.

When asked how Koromaus felt about his new hairdo, the teacher said he's glad there are warm temperatures outside and that summer is on the way.

“It's windy,” he said.
