IUP rape charges dropped

INDIANA — Rape charges against a former Indiana (Pa.) University student have been dismissed after his accuser refused to testify at a preliminary hearing.

The accuser told a judge Tuesday that she didn’t want to testify, prompting him to throw out the charges against 18-year-old William Rice Scott.

District Attorney Patrick Dougherty says the woman wanted to move on and put the incident behind her.

Scott had been accused of raping a woman during a party at a fraternity house in August. His lawyer has maintained that the encounter was consensual.

Scott is not a member of the fraternity. Though he was a student at the time of the incident, he’s no longer enrolled at IUP.
