HARRISBURG — Some early childhood centers certified under Pennsylvania’s state-subsidized pre-kindergarten program are starting to tell parents that they are closing after next week because of the state’s four-month-old budget stalemate.

A spokesman for the Pre-K For PA coalition said Friday that organizations closing their doors by Nov. 10 currently educate at least 800 children in the Pre-K Counts program.

Children from low-income families qualify for Pre-K Counts. Other Pre-K Counts providers are laying off staff or asking them to work for free.

In northeastern Pennsylvania, the Growing Place Child Care Centers in Brodheadsville is telling Pre-K Counts parents that it’s closing after next Friday until a budget is passed.
