U.S. Steel decides against new HQPITTSBURGH — United States Steel has pulled out of a deal to build its new world headquarters as part of the ongoing redevelopment of the former Civic Arena site by the Penguins.Thursday’s decision comes almost exactly a year after company, team, local and state officials announced the plans at the Consol Energy Center, the Penguins new arena. It sits cross the street from the site where a team-controlled subsidiary planned to break ground on the new headquarters, which were supposed to open in 2017.That’s key because the company’s 50-year lease will expire at the 64-story U.S. Steel Tower downtown by then. Local government and team officials say the loss of U.S. Steel won’t stop the redevelopment, estimated at $440 million.U.S. Steel says only it will honor its current lease.

Penn State AD prefers renovationSTATE COLLEGE — Penn State’s athletic director says she would prefer to renovate Beaver Stadium rather than build a new stadium on campus.The announcement came Wednesday after Sandy Barbour addressed the Nittany Lion faithful during a town hall meeting.Barbour also said she wasn’t opposed to reducing Beaver Stadium’s seating capacity.Beaver Stadium, with just under 107,000 seats, is the second-largest college football venue and the third-largest stadium in the world. But university officials said they’ve received complaints for years that the building was overcrowded.

Immunization rule changes soughtHARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania departments of Health and Education say they’ll seek changes to immunization regulations for school children that they say will better protect students from illness.The departments said Thursday that they would begin seeking regulatory approval to strengthen the current requirements.Those changes would include requiring students to receive their final dose within the first five school days, or at least show a health care provider’s plan to complete a multi-dose immunization.The proposal also would add vaccination requirements, including a pertussis vaccine and a dose of meningococcal vaccine for students before they start 12th grade.
